Storage and Handling of Dried Pulses

Simple practices that protect lentil, chickpea and bean shipments from moisture and pest damage in transit and storage.

Dried pulses are shelf-stable but not indestructible — moisture ingress and pest activity are the two most common causes of quality loss between origin and final storage.

Keeping pulses in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space, off the floor and away from walls, reduces the risk of condensation forming inside packaging during temperature swings in transit.

Bags should be inspected on arrival for any signs of moisture damage or pest activity before being moved into long-term storage, so any issue is caught early rather than after redistribution.

For buyers holding stock for an extended period, periodic spot-checks of a sample from different pallets help catch developing issues before they spread across a full shipment.
